The Bottom Line on Cannabis/Marijuana; By Del Snavely
I’ve been educating the good people of North Dakota on the true science of cannabis/marijuana/hemp as best I can without overloading anyone for almost two years now. I’ve seen that a majority of North Dakotans understand that the underlying logic of cannabis prohibition is wrong. So here is more verifiable information and facts that could change the course of our World, the USA and North Dakota.
There are literally more than 600 hundred medicinal strains and hundreds of hemp strains of cannabis, yet they all have the same exact physical and biological makeup, only to varying degrees. Kind of like a St. Bernard and a Miniature Pincer both are dogs. Their uses range from curing cancer all the way to making plastic and bio-fuel.
When we decide to actually “regulate” cannabis in all forms as a commodity (and we can), through legal programs such as pharmacies, coffee shops and liquor stores to adults 21 and over, as well as allowing the cultivation, given any legitimate market, then and only then is the following partial list of what would happen possible.
1. Immediately State & Local taxes will be imposed at high rates bringing in millions of dollars. This will stimulate the economy and raise money for real drug treatment programs helping real drug addicts.
2. Immediately reduce the cannabis black market to nothing resulting in reduced teen use and police officers have more time for more important crimes that involve victims.
3. Immediately reduce the number of pharmaceutical drugs needed by medical patients and replace an estimated 15% - 25% of dangerous pharmaceutical drugs with a safe one, thereby reducing the overdose rate for prescription drugs.
4. Immediately reduce prison population, saving taxpayers and the state millions per year. Money that can be used to fund real drug treatment programs. Drug possession accounts for 92% of all prison incarcerations in the US. Cannabis/marijuana possession accounts for 80% of that. This single plant holds up the entire prison industrial complex.
5. Immediately put a wall between cannabis/marijuana and hard chemical drugs by telling the truth about marijuana so that children will believe what we say about dangerous chemical drugs. Thereby reducing teen use of dangerous chemical drugs. If and when they try marijuana and see we lied, we may have lied about all drugs in their eyes.
6. Immediately reduce the number of teens trying dangerous drugs because the person they bought marijuana from gave them something else to try for free.
7. Immediately our college students would no longer have criminal records, be denied grants, scholarships and student loans for school. Right now any college student even a student over 21 can and will have their grants canceled and are not eligible for scholarships and in many cases loans.
8. Immediately save countless lives from cancer considering cannabis is shown to stop the growth of and in many cases eradicate many types of cancer completely. It is the only treatment that does this while protecting healthy cells.
9. Immediately help millions of people who would use medical marijuana if it were legal and keep them out of our jails.
10. Immediately remove all previous arrest records for possession or transfer of cannabis/marijuana and release all prisoners of non-violent possession or transfer of cannabis/marijuana. Reducing prison spending and overcrowding.
11. Immediately remove cannabis/marijuana from the drug test list for jobs. Allowing hundreds of thousands of cannabis users to get good paying jobs and pay their taxes.
12. In time reduce Global Warming by using hemp seed for fuel, plastic, food, paper and hundreds of other items.
13. Immediately compete with the rest of the world for the cannabis/marijuana/hemp market. Allowing the US to again have a chance to be the world leader in something other than prison population. The US holds 5% of the worlds population and 25% of the worlds prisoners.
14. Immediately and more in time reduce the consumption of alcohol on the whole by giving adults a safer alternative that does not have the negative side effects of alcohol. Thereby reducing drunken driving deaths, assaults, domestic violence and alcohol overdose.
15. (If done federally, which we need badly) Immediately allow the opening of an entire Cultural Economic Boom the likes of which have never been seen. The cannabis/marijuana culture encompasses every part of the world, religion, race, color, nationality, economic standing and political belief. This business boom would be from hemp and hippie too industrial building supplies, plastic and all things medicinal. It would see the growth of hundreds of thousands of new business’ hundreds of new industries and all of the billions of dollars in taxes generated. This one plant could pull our country out of debt all by itself given the freedom of the free market system.
16. Immediately families will no longer be split apart and children taken from their parents by the government for a plant less harmful than alcohol. Saving families, tax dollars and much more.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Some greatly amazing things will happen when we decide to take the prohibition away from this plant. As the pharmaceutical companies would say “The benefits far outweigh the risks”. It is time, but it will only happen when we decide we’re going to substitute “Harm Reduction” for “Incarceration”! The longer we refuse to regulate cannabis, the more it hurts us all. Prohibition in and of itself, creates and perpetuates crime. This is a proven fact! LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN! Prohibition in and of itself, creates and perpetuates crime. This is a proven fact!
When alcohol prohibition was repealed it took 36 states to ratify our US Constitution. I believe North Dakotans are compassionate and intelligent people. We can remove the prohibition of cannabis/marijuana/hemp here, and show the rest of the country that we will not criminalize our population only to satisfy an out of control federal government.
“It is impossible to regulate anything that is not legal.” It’s time for regulation and harm reduction!
Sincerely,
Del Snavely
